Lash Retention Explained

One of the most common questions clients ask is:
“How long will my lash extensions last?”

The answer depends on more than just the glue. Lash retention is influenced by your natural lash cycle, proper application, and how you care for your lashes after your appointment.

Let’s break it down.

Your Natural Lash Cycle

Your natural lashes are constantly growing, maturing, and shedding. On average, we shed 2–3 natural lashes per day — this is completely normal and part of a healthy renewal process.

Because lash extensions are bonded to your natural lashes, when a natural lash sheds, the extension attached to it sheds too. This is not caused by the extensions — it’s simply biology.

Everyone’s lash cycle is slightly different. Some clients retain their extensions beautifully for four weeks, while others need refills every two to three weeks to maintain fullness. This is why refill schedules are personalized.

For new clients, a two-week refill is usually recommended so you and your lash tech can monitor your individual lash cycle and adjust your maintenance plan accordingly.

A full set of lash extensions looks its best in the first few weeks. Over time, natural shedding and daily wear will reduce fullness.

To maintain a consistent, full look, refills are recommended no later than three weeks. This keeps your lash line balanced and prevents the need for a new full set.

One of the most important factors in lash retention is proper cleansing.

Washing your lash extensions every morning and evening is essential. Using a professional lash-safe cleanser, such as Lanna Lash “Lash Refresher Gel Cleanser”, along with a soft brush designed specifically for eyelash extensions, and makeup remover will ensure the lashes are cleaned thoroughly without damaging the bond.

When cleansing, it’s important to focus on the root area of the lashes. This is where oil from the skin, makeup residue, and daily debris naturally accumulate. If this buildup is not properly removed, it can affect retention and cause extensions — especially wispy and volume sets — to lose their fluffiness and structure.

After cleansing:

  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  • Gently dab dry with a towel (do not rub).
  • Brush through the lashes with a clean spoolie.
  • Allow them to air dry naturally or use a lash fan.

Avoid using hair dryers, as high heat and strong airflow can disturb the lash direction.

It is also important to keep cotton products away from your extensions. Cotton pads, face wipes, and washcloths can catch onto the base of the extensions and cause premature pulling or shedding.

Brushing your lashes a couple of times per day is enough to keep them neat. Over-brushing can stimulate the lash line and may contribute to early shedding. A dual-ended lash brush with a spoolie is ideal for daily maintenance and easy touch-ups throughout the day.

When applied correctly and cared for properly, lash extensions are safe, comfortable, and designed to move naturally with your lash growth cycle.

Bottom line, lash retention is about understanding your natural lash cycle, maintaining proper hygiene, and following a refill schedule that works for you.
